Any church is a reflection of the people involved. Good Samaritan is fortunate to have a truly extraordinary group of talented and dedicated people to draw upon. There is no office staff as such, and most support functions are provided on a volunteer basis. Almost every member of the church is active in one or more of these activities.

Our Priest-in-Charge

Father William C. (Bill) Warnky, Priest in Charge at Good Samaritan, came to us from Christ Episcopal Church, Dallas, where he had been Assistant to the Rector.

Father Warnky was born in Flushing, Queens, New York, and grew up in Port Washington, New York (on Long Island). His undergraduate education was at Bethany College in West Virginia.

After recognizing his calling to the ministry, he studied at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, and received his Master of Divinity degree at the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. He did further graduate study at Nashotah House Theological Seminary, Nashotah, Wisconsin. He was ordained as a deacon in 1976 and as a priest in 1977.

Father Warnky has served in many churches in the Dallas area, including 17 years at St. Andrews, Farmer's Branch, and earlier served at St. Luke's in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  He has twice served in the Diocese's Mission Department, and was on the Diocesan Executive Council for two years as chair of the Central Convocation.

Father Warnky resides in East Dallas. He has three children, Charles, 25, Mary, 24, and Eric, 7.

He can be reached by telephone at:

 The Bishop's Committee (Vestry)

The governing body of the church is the Bishop's committee, which would be known as the vestry in a larger church (and in fact is often spoken of as such at Good Samaritan). There are six lay members, who serve three-year terms on a staggered cycle. The presiding officer of the Vestry is the Priest in Charge, ex officio. Responsible for the routine exercise of the Vestry's responsibilities is the Bishop's Warden, who would be known as the Senior Warden in a larger church (and again, is here often spoken of as such). Assisting in this task is the Junior Warden.

The Vestry is elected directly by the church membership. The Wardens are nominated by the Vestry for appointment by the Bishop, and serve one year in the position. Warren Hastings (right) is Senior Warden-designate, and Kelly Moore (our immediate past Senior Warden) is Junior Warden-designate.

The current membership of the Bishop's Committee is:

Warren Hastings (Senior Warden)
Kelly Moore (Junior Warden)
Bill Gibson (also Treasurer of the church)
Denise Pruitt
Dan Rech
Marilyn Romes

The Vestry meets monthly, usually on the second Monday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Members of the church are welcome to attend as observers.

The Choir

Good Samaritan's choir is under the leadership of James McQuillen, Organist and Choirmaster. James is a long-time resident of Plano, and studied piano, voice, and conducting at Southern Methodist University and the University of British Columbia. He is currently a freelance Music Director and Conductor, focusing on musical theater.

He has worked at Dallas Theater Center, Casa Ma–ana, Lyric Stage in Irving, Plano Repertory Theater, North Carolina Theater, and other colleges and theaters around town. He is about to go into rehearsal for "The Pajama Game" at Lyric Stage. James has also worked as an accompanist in classical music in Dallas; Vancouver, British Columbia; and NŸrnburg, Germany. He teaches voice privately and through the choir program at Richardson High School.

The choir is open to any interested person; no formal musical training is required. The current core membership is:

Sopranos

Victoria Goller

Denise Pruitt
Marilyn Romes
Bibi Tew

The church has a Kurzweil 5000 digital organ/piano, which sounds through a Mackie 406M amplifier and Yamaha speakers.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is responsible for preparing the altar for all services at the church, for the care and ordering of all altar linens, upkeep of all candles and special supplies needed for services, flower arrangements, and last-minute tidying of the sanctuary and the sacristy.

Lay readers and ministers

In Good Samaritan's service, the scripture lessons are normally read by lay readers, and lay ministers (usually the same persons) assist the celebrant at the altar. The lay ministers are required to be licensed by the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas.

The lay ministry corps is supervised by Warren Hastings. The members are:

Rob Brown
Warren Hastings
Kelly Moore
Larry Pruitt
(normally reader only)
Virginia Ritchie
Kevin Stuteville  (reader only)
Shari Taylor

You can reach Warren by phone at 214-826-4685, or e-mail him by clicking here:

Parish nurse program

The role of the Parish Nurse is primarily that of health advocate and educational resource for individuals in our church community. The Parish Nurse's responsibilities include supporting Father Michael with pastoral care activities, especially with regard to reaching out to or visiting those church members who are ill or affected by the illness of a loved one. The Parish Nurse will also conduct programs to make the church members aware of steps they should take and matters they should heed toward the end of continuing good health and healthy life.

We are fortunate to have Margaret Hastings, R.N., (right) as our Parish Nurse. She describes the concept of congregational nursing thus: "Congregational nursing is built on the premise that the whole person - body, mind and spirit - must be in harmony for health to exist. Historically, the medical community has addressed biological, physiological, and mental health, while traditionally the Church community has been most directly concerned with spiritual health. An opportunity to weave together cure of the body and cure of the soul has presented itself in the Health Ministry of Parish Nursing. To quote a recent mentor, 'Jesus was a holistic healer; He did not see a distinction between body and spirit when He forgave and restored sight'."

Daughters of the King

Daughters of the King is a women's order dedicated to prayer, service, and evangelism.

The motto of the Order is:

For His Sake...
I am but one, but I am one.

Church finance

Bill Gibson is the church Treasurer, and is responsible for all church financial matters, including keeping of the church's financial books and contracting for goods and services.

Facility maintenance

Most of the maintenance of the church buildings and equipment is performed by skilled members of the church. Bill Gibson is the key to this operation.

Groundskeeping and floriculture

The church campus includes a garden of native flowers and plants revolving around a statue of St. Francis. Adjacent to the church buildings is an open field planted in wildflowers, blooming in spring and early summer. The buildings proper are surrounded by a lush lawn.

The groundskeeping and floriculture is done by church members. Claude Tew, a skilled gardener, is the key to this important operation.
